Uplifting Nigeria’s agricultural sector through technology begins with recognizing agriculture as a data-driven enterprise rather than merely a subsistence activity.

With a large proportion of Nigeria’s population engaged in farming, integrating digital tools can significantly improve productivity, reduce waste, and enhance income.

Technology provides the means to modernize farming practices, improve decision-making, and make agriculture more attractive to younger generations.

One of the most impactful technological interventions is precision agriculture. Using tools such as GPS-enabled devices, sensors, and drones, farmers can monitor soil health, moisture levels, and crop growth in real time.

This enables the optimal application of water, fertilizers, and pesticides, reducing costs and minimizing environmental degradation while increasing yield per hectare.

Mobile technology plays a crucial role in empowering smallholder farmers, who make up the majority of Nigeria’s agricultural workforce. Through mobile phones, farmers can access weather forecasts, market prices, and agronomic advice in local languages. These services reduce uncertainty, improve planning, and protect farmers from exploitative middlemen.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning can further enhance farm productivity by enabling predictive analytics.

Access to finance has long constrained Nigeria’s agricultural growth, and financial technology (fintech) offers a viable solution. Digital lending platforms can assess farmers’ creditworthiness using alternative data such as farm size, transaction history, and mobile usage.

This expands access to credit for farmers who lack traditional collateral, enabling them to invest in improved inputs and technologies.

Blockchain technology can be leveraged to enhance transparency and trust across the agricultural value chain. By enabling traceability from farm to market, blockchain can reduce fraud, ensure food safety, and improve export competitiveness.

It also helps farmers receive fair prices by providing verifiable records of production and quality.

Mechanization remains essential for improving efficiency, and technology can make it more accessible. Digital platforms for tractor and equipment sharing allow small-scale farmers to rent machinery on demand, reducing the need for large capital investments. This approach increases land cultivation and reduces the drudgery associated with manual farming.

Post-harvest losses, which account for a significant percentage of Nigeria’s agricultural waste, can be reduced through technology-enabled storage and processing.

Smart storage systems equipped with temperature and humidity sensors help preserve produce, while small-scale processing technologies add value and extend shelf life, improving farmers’ incomes.

E-extension services are transforming agricultural education and knowledge dissemination. Virtual training platforms, video tutorials, and interactive voice response systems can reach remote farmers more efficiently than traditional extension methods. This ensures best practices and innovations are rapidly adopted across different regions.

Youth engagement is critical to the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By integrating technology such as agribusiness apps, digital marketplaces, and smart farming tools, agriculture can be repositioned as a profitable and innovative career path. This helps address youth unemployment while injecting fresh ideas into the sector.

Digital marketplaces are reshaping how agricultural products are traded. Online platforms connect farmers directly with buyers, processors, and exporters, reducing transaction costs and improving price transparency. This integration strengthens value chains and enhances farmers’ bargaining power.

Government policy and institutional support are vital for scaling technological solutions in agriculture. Investments in rural broadband, power infrastructure, and supportive regulatory frameworks create an enabling environment for agri-tech innovation. Public–Private Partnerships (PPP) can accelerate the deployment of these technologies nationwide.

Research and development institutions must also leverage technology to generate locally relevant innovations. Data analytics, simulation tools, and collaborative digital platforms can improve agricultural research outcomes. Aligning research outputs with farmers’ real-world needs ensures that technology adoption leads to tangible benefits.

In conclusion, leveraging technology to uplift Nigeria’s agricultural sector requires a holistic approach that integrates digital tools across production, financing, education, and markets.

When supported by sound policy, infrastructure, and human capacity development, technology can transform agriculture into a resilient, efficient, and inclusive driver of national economic growth, thereby making Nigeria reclaim her seeming lost glory as the giant of Africa.
