Court sentences Kanu to Life Imprisonment over Terrorism Conviction

Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment over terrorism offences.

The presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, delivered the judgement on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

The prosecuting counsel had earlier sought a death sentence from the court, following Kanu's conviction over terrorism.

It's noteworthy that the judge had earlier, on the same day, found Kanu guilty of seven count charges filed against him by the federal government, hence convicting the IPOB leader of the terrorism charges placed against him by the prosecuting counsel.

Justice Omotosho said the right to self-determination remained a political right, adding: “Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, gives people the right to self-determination.”

The judge however enthused that Nigeria is an indivisible state and cannot be divided, stating that anyone agitating for a break up of the country is breaking the law.

“The defendant is using terrorism as a weapon to bring secession to Nigeria. The defendant did not threaten Nigeria only, but his own people,” the judge declared.
