Black Thursday

Rostrum The ancient narrow pathway had become so bad that they could not find their way to their destination as the three moved in a grey Honda Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) being piloted by Dayo who was very mindful of the steering. It was on a Thursday. The 35-year-old Misters Dayo, Emeka and Okon were old time friends who reunited just a few days ago at Nsukka in Enugu State having lost contacts about eight years back, or thereabouts, after their graduation from one of the reputable higher citadels of learning in Nigeria situated in the Eastern part of the country, precisely University of Nigeria Nsukka popularly known by its acronym ‘U.N.N’. What occasioned the long-awaited reunion was the convention of their alma-mater’s alumni body themed ‘The homecoming of UNN Alumni’, which usually held once in a blue moon. Though they never studied in the same department, they were conspicuously best of friends during their school days that people within bega...

Your Course of Study Isn't a Barrier

Recently, I overheard someone telling a friend that the discipline he studied in the university made him not to actualize his dream career. He was very emphatic about his touching, but ill-advised, story.

Do not let anyone deceive you that studying a certain course in the university, or any citadel of higher learning, will pose a barrier to your chosen career path.

For instance, studying any discipline in an institution will never cause a hitch while pursuing a career in tech, or digital logic. This is a proven fact, not a mere perception.

If you already have a digital/tech talent and intend to invest in, or develop, it in the future, studying Animal Science or whatever in a varsity cannot set in a setback to your desired dream. Even if there's no existing talent or skill but you look forward to acquiring one in the near future, your present course of study has no role to play towards securing such a desired skill.

Often times, our young ones are being misled by their mentors, or so-called role models, in their respective quests to obtain a skill, particularly a tech-oriented one. They would be misinformed that securing admission to study a certain course would pose a threat to their chosen career path in tech.

Though studying Electronics Engineering, or Telecommunications Engineering, or any related discipline, will be an added advantage to acquiring a lucrative digital skill, anyone could still acquire those cherished skills if they studied - or are studying - Food & Nutrition or what have you.

To obtain and grow a career in tech, what you need is just the zeal and the needed network, coupled with determination and persistence. When you're desirous to do something, you must look out for an opportunity; if you're so determined, you would continue to search for a pathway even if there seems to be none; and if you're persistent, you would continue to strive amidst all odds having eventually discovered an opportunity.

Achieving such a goal requires bearing a sound policy and ensuring it remains awake as the journey progresses. A healthy policy being borne by a zealous, determined and persistent individual, or even an entity, can do wonders.

So, henceforth, you're enjoined to drop those frivolous excuses toward seeing a career in tech as a priority. Think about it.

See you at the top!
